Hippies, Ronald Reagan and Chainsaws ... that sums up this horror comedy from the twisted mind of actor, David Arquette. The Tripper is a satire on slasher films, Republicans and vans with peace signs painted on em. The film begins in Reagan-era 80s, where a small boy witnesses his lumberjack father getting into a brawl with a tree-loving protester. While his father is dragged away by police, the boy grabs a chainsaw and cuts up the protester. Fast forward to the present, as a group of teens are vanning on their way to a hippie festival in the woods. Joey and Linda are the "bad" influences for their pals, Samantha and Ivan, while Jack and Jade are busy with each other, getting high and laid.
Before they reach the festival, they get into a tumble with several local rednecks, where we get to see there is a lot more to Sam than meets the eye. You see, she had ended a relationship with a jealous, fanatical republican, Jimmy, during a hallucinating trip with her pal, Linda. While Ivan tries unsuccessfully to cut back on his drug abuse.
The American Free Love Festival is banquet of mind-altering substances, nudism, and rock bands. The perfect setting for a deranged killer sporting a Ronald Reagan mask, and conservative suit and tie. This poses a problem for the town's Mayor and local law enforcement, as the body count begins. They can't afford to lose the potential revenue for the community. And the event promoter, Frank Baker, doesn't want anything to prevent the show from moving forward.
As the festival continues, Sheriff Buzz tries to hunt down the killer, while everyone else is partying their respective asses off. The rednecks are seeking some revenge from our group of doped up heroes. And Jimmy finds out where Sam currently is, and seeks some "closure."
Even more bizarre than the storyline behind The Tripper, is the none typical horror cast (keeping it in the family, aside):
